Cyber Monday 2012 proved to be the biggest day ever for Kindle sales worldwide, cementing the top four spots for Kindle e-readers and Kindle fires on Amazon’s worldwide bestsellers list. The Kindle devices have held the top four spots since their launch nearly three months ago.

To celebrate Cyber Monday, Amazon.com offered the Kindle Fire for $129.

SEATTLE — The popularity of Amazon.com's Kindle e-readers continues to help boost Amazon.com's sales. However, net income for the third quarter was disappointing.

Amazon.com reported that net sales for the third quarter increased 44% to $10.88 billion in the third quarter, compared with $7.56 billion in third quarter 2010. Net income decreased 73% to $63 million in the third quarter, or 14 cents per diluted share, compared with net income of $231 million, or 51 cents per diluted share, in third quarter 2010.

NEW YORK — RadioShack, which already offers the Amazon Kindle, has expanded its e-reader offerings with the addition of the Nook from Barnes & Noble. The company announced Wednesday that it will offer Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reading devices and related accessories to more than 3,000 RadioShack stores nationwide and online at radioshack.com, beginning Oct. 3.

Target and Best Buy offered the Wi-Fi-enabled Kindle version capable of holding up to 3,500 books, and Target even featured the device on the cover of its weekly ad with a large photo. Walmart opted for a similar strategy and featured the Wi-Fi-enabled Nook capable of holding 1,500 books for $149 on the cover of its circular.

SEATTLE  -- Retail industry online sales ascended to new heights during the past holiday season and as Amazon.com’s fourth quarter results show it was a key driver of the growth.

The company’s fourth quarter sales increased 36% to nearly $13 billion and its full year sales increased 40% to $34.2 billion. North America fueled the increase with sales that were up in the U.S. and Canada by 45% to $7.21 billion. Profits grew at a slower pace with fourth quarter net income up 8% to $416 million and full year profits up 28% to $1.15 billion.
