Charming Shoppes reported Friday that net income for the first quarter plummeted 31.7% to $17.8 million, from $26 million in the year-ago period.

BENSALEM, Pa. — Charming Shoppes reported Friday that net income for the first quarter plummeted 31.7% to $17.8 million, from $26 million in the year-ago period.

Sales dropped 4.6% to $481.3 million, largely due to the shuttering of 157 stores. E-commerce was a strength in the quarter, up 18% over the prior-year period.

Charming Shoppes said it would close 240 unprofitable stores in 2011, or nearly 12% of its total outlets, and that more than half of those would be Fashion Bug stores.

BENSALEM, Pa. -- Charming Shoppes said it would close 240 unprofitable stores in 2011, or nearly 12% of its total outlets, and that more than half of those would be Fashion Bug stores. 

 The locations were not disclosed.

The company said all 30 of its Catherines Plus Sizes stores in outlet locations would be shuttered over a two-year period.

The store closing news came on the heels of the retailer’s announcement it had named interim CEO Anthony M. Romano as president and CEO, replacing James P. Fogarty, who retired in October.

Bensalem , Pa. (Jun. 3) Charming Shoppes, said Thursday that it returned to a first-quarter profit, even though its sales decreased because it closed dozens of stores.

For the three months that ended on May 1, the owner of Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Catherines stores reported net income of $3.9 million, compared with a previous net loss of $6.6 million.
