While looking at the data in May 2012 compared to May 2013, we see interesting changes that came from Toys "R" Us. Their circular suggests a switch in advertising strategy. Their ad blocks per page decreased 10% while ad blocks per circular increased 79.1%. Also, the total number of circular pages increased by 44.4%.

The company is leveraging the store brand offering — which includes facial and bath tissue, paper towels, trash bags, food storage necessities, kitchen and bathroom cleaners, bulbs and extension cords — to strengthen its position among the one-stop shopping key players.

CVS/pharmacy will offer up to 1 million free smartphones to eligible customers, in an effort to encourage shoppers to use its mobile app.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy will offer up to 1 million free smartphones to eligible customers, in an effort to encourage shoppers to use its mobile app.  

Consumers who want a new smartphone or who are eligible for a device upgrade with their current mobile service provider can visit the site and choose from a variety of Android smartphones. They can then sign up for a new contract or upgrade to a two-year contract, and the phone will be shipped directly to them.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy is making some changes to its Gold Emblem food product line, including enhanced ingredients and new flavors, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

The line has been revamped with more options and a new look. Gold Emblem includes more than 250 products, such as nuts, trail mixes, chips, pretzels, dried candies, cookies, spices, juices, condiments, baking products and breakfast bars. CVS introduced it in 1995, making it one of the first private-label food lines created by a major drug store chain.

Keeping with their November strategy, Walmart continued its aggressive promotions this month, and has shown a significant increase in both drop of flyer and pages per flyer. They showed the highest growth compared to other advertisers in page counts, and the second highest growth in number of flyers.

Rockbridge Growth Equity has acquired Triad Retail Media, a 300 person digital retail media agency founded by former Procter & Gamble executive Greg Murtagh.

The acquisition is expected to be transparent to Triad’s retail clients such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, eBay, Toys "R" Us and CVS, but is expected to bring to Triad new capabilities as it benefits from Rockbridge’s ownership interest in other companies.

Nineteen of the nation’s leading retail and CPG companies received perfect scores on the 2013 Corporate Equality Index compiled by the Human Rights Campaign.

The Human Rights Campaign released its 2013 Corporate Equality Index, which gives companies ratings of up to 100% based on their policies regarding LGBT employees and also released a buyer's guide for LGBT consumers. According to the equality advocacy group, a total of 1,848 companies were invited to submit applications, of those 530 actually did so and of those 252 received scores of 100%.

As tropical storm Isaac barrels down on the Gulf Coast area, CVS/pharmacy has announced that, while complying with any mandatory evacuation order given by local officials, it is keeping its stores in affected areas open for as long as possible and stocking them with such storm preparedness items as water, batteries, flashlights and other products to help in an emergency.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Shopkick, a shopping application that rewards shoppers for walking into stores and interacting with products, has teamed up with CVS/pharmacy to roll out a first-ever offering of walk-in and other rewards at a retail pharmacy, Shopkick announced on Tuesday.

The program kicks off with a special offer, kicking $5 back to shoppers who visit participating CVS/pharmacy locations with the Shopkick app.

With the start of Back to School promotions, (and taking JCPenney out of the mix) we witnessed increase in page count that was driven mainly by significant increases in Walmart’s and Sears’ page counts.

JCPenney has been drastically altering their promotional strategy in past couple of months, however this month, the store did not promote at all, causing curiosity for many customers. (It should be noted that JCPenney did release circulars the week of July 29th that will be counted in the August report.)

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS/pharmacy is taking a greater step toward targeting the Hispanic market with the launch of its new Spanish-language website.

Like the English-language site, the Spanish version, located at http://es.cvs.com, enables shoppers to manage their prescription account, get health information, purchase products, access coupons, etc. According to a MediaPost article, Google indicated that the new CVS Spanish website consists of 67,000 pages, most of which are product SKUs.

According to president and CEO Larry Merlo, the company is well-positioned for growth in an evolving healthcare market.

Merlo made note in the meeting of Walgreens’ battle with Express Scripts, which has created opportunity for CVS to pick up significant prescription business.

The year got started with an overall drop in circular counts per market from five flyers to four flyers compared with January 2011.

The year got started with an overall drop in circular counts per market from five flyers to four flyers compared with January 2011. Conversely, pages per market saw an increase of 7.6% compared with the previous year. 

There was a noticeable jump in Lowes’ number of pages per market due to a 20-page insert dropping in the first week of January this year, where last year they distributed a two-page insert during the same week. However, they reduced their circulation from three to two circulars per market when compared with last year.
