Macy's CEO takes stand in Martha Stewart case

Terry Lundgren, CEO of Macy’s, took the stand on Monday to testify in the trial of two Macy's lawsuits regarding the deal between JCPenney and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. The long-awaited trial began last Wednesday, in New York Supreme Court.

News media reported that Tiffany filed suit against Issaquah, Wash.-based Costco in the Federal District Court in Manhattan.

NYC files derivative suit vs. Wal-Mart

A report by Reuters said that New York City's pension funds have filed a derivative lawsuit against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. based on reported allegations of bribery in Mexico and a possible cover-up by Wal-Mart officials.

The suit, filed in Delaware Chancery Court, alleges that Wal-Mart's officers and board of directors breached their fiduciary duty to both the company and shareholders by failing to properly handle claims of alleged bribery and apparently attempting to cover up details of the issue.

Report: Barnes & Noble files suit to block Nook patent royalty claim

A report released Tuesday by Bloomberg said that Barnes & Noble has filed suit against LSI Corp. to prevent the chipmaker from demanding patent royalties on sales of the bookseller’s Nook digital reader.

NEW YORK — A report released Tuesday by Bloomberg said that Barnes & Noble has filed suit against LSI Corp. to prevent the chipmaker from demanding patent royalties on sales of the bookseller’s Nook digital reader.

According to the report, the suit is a preemptive strategy by Barnes & Noble, as LSI had previously notified the retailer of intentions “to pursue claims of infringement of the LSI patents,” according to the complaint filed Monday in federal court in San Francisco.

A report released Tuesday by the Associated Press said that the U.S. Supreme Court may block a massive sex discrimination lawsuit against Wal-Mart on behalf of at least 500,000 women, and that could make it harder for other workers nationwide to bring class-action claims against large employers.

The 10-year-old lawsuit, argued at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, claims that Wal-Mart Stores favors men over women in pay and promotions. Billions of dollars are at stake if it is allowed to go forward as a class action suit.

Barnes & Noble's legal matters related to its Nook e-reader may be resolved, as the company announced that it has settled a lawsuit brought against the company by Spring Design Inc. Spring Design initiated legal action against Barnes & Noble in November 2009, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, claiming that the bookseller illegally copied the screen design of the Spring Alex e-reader.

CVS Caremark has pulled the plug on its plan to hire former Walmart exec Hank Mullany, and is handing the keys to its retail business on an interim basis to Mike Bloom, EVP merchandising and supply chain, and Scott Baker, EVP internal operations and real estate, who will assume management for the company’s 7,100-plus stores.

The trial is scheduled for early March.

Borders announces exec changes

ANN ARBOR , Mich. (Jun. 4) Borders Group announced that Mike Edwards has been appointed president of Borders Group and president and CEO of Borders Inc., the principle subsidiary of Borders Group.
