Net income fell to $5.92 million in the quarter, down from $10.2 million in the year-ago period.

Revenue increased 6.7% to $686.2 million. Retail store sales rose 5% to $438.6 million and direct sales jumped 10% to $238.1 million

Same-store sales, which include direct sales, increased 3%. Excluding a calendar shift, comparable-store sales increased 4%.

The company priced its offering of five million shares at $16 and enjoyed a 32% pop at the open when shares began trading at $21. The upward momentum proved to be unsustainable and by the close shares had receded to $20, registering a still respectable first day gain of 25%.

Two years of deep same-store sales declines can easily feel like a death sentence for most retailers. However, the data suggests it is indeed far from that. 

We analyzed all specialty retailers with sufficient public data over the last 20 years—nearly 70 retailers—and found that the majority of retailers who substantially underperformed the market ended up turning their comps positive in relatively short order.

J.Crew is expanding into Asia through a partnership with Hong Kong-based specialty store operator Lane Crawford.

NEW YORK — J.Crew is expanding into Asia through a partnership with Hong Kong-based specialty store operator Lane Crawford.

Beginning in October, a curated selection of the J.Crew autumn/winter 2012 women's ready-to-wear and shoes, men's apparel and accessory collections will be available at select Lane Crawford stores in Hong Kong and China. It is the first time J.Crew goods will be featured in a retail environment outside of North America.

J.Crew Group reported that first-quarter revenues decreased 1% to $409.5 million and comparable company sales (which include same-store sales, direct sales and shipping and handling revenues) were down 3% compared with an increase of 16% for the same period last year.

NEW YORK— J.Crew Group reported that first-quarter revenues decreased 1% to $409.5  million and comparable company sales (which include same-store sales, direct sales and shipping and handling revenues) were down 3% compared with an increase of 16% for the same period last year.

Store sales decreased 3% to $281.2 million, with comparable-store sales decreasing 6%.  Comparable-store sales increased by 15% in the first quarter of fiscal 2010.
