Toy manufacturer Mega Brands reported that net sales in the second quarter increased 13% to $94.5 million compared with $83.9 million in the corresponding 2011 period.

MONTREAL — Toy manufacturer Mega Brands reported that net sales in the second quarter increased 13% to $94.5 million compared with $83.9 million in the corresponding 2011 period.

Toy sales increased 14% compared to the second quarter of 2011, driven by higher product shipments in the preschool and boys construction categories. Toy sales have increased year-over-year in ten of the last 11 quarters.

Sales of stationery and ctivities products were up 10%, the fifth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in this segment.

However, there was also an apparent shift toward more simple toys, perhaps reflecting the current economy and the inability of many parents to shell out $100 on a toy that will only get played with a short while.

Mega Brands announced that it has extended its licensing agreement with Hit Entertainment to develop construction sets based on Thomas & Friends.

MONTREAL — Mega Brands announced that it has extended its licensing agreement with Hit Entertainment to  develop construction sets based on Thomas & Friends.

Under the expanded contract, Mega Brands is granted the global rights to create all-new construction toy sets based on the exciting world of Thomas & Friends, including new iconic characters and Island of Sodor destinations straight from the popular long-running television series, according to a press release.
