RadioShack Corp. is reportedly preparing to file for bankruptcy as early as the beginning of February. According to the Wall Street Journal, RadioShack is currently in talks with several private equity firms about possibly buying its assets out of bankruptcy.

RadioShack may also seek reduction and restructuring of its debt in bankruptcy court. The retailer stated in a December SEC filing that it may have to file for bankruptcy if it is unable to raise funds or receive permission from lenders to close underperforming stores.

Gift card sales are expected to reach record levels again this holiday season and new research from the National Retail Federation (NRF) offers insight into the increased popularity of stored value products.

More than half of shoppers polled by NRF’s Gift Card Spending Survey said they will buy gift cards this holiday season because the cards allow the recipient to select their own gift. More than 25% of shoppers said gift cards are easier and faster to buy, and 3.8% said the cards help them stick to their holiday budgets.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced that it will sell off about $209.3 million worth of debt as the company moves to refinance $679 million worth of debt due between 2028 and 2031, the mass merchandise retailer said.

Target announced plans to purchase $170 million in 6.75% debentures due 2028, $154.9 million in 6.65% debentures due 2028 and $354 million in 7% debentures due 2031.

The company said the $209.3 million tendered so far represented 20.31%, 25.22% and 38.32% of the totals of the three respective security titles.

NRF’s 2011 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found that eight in 10 shoppers will give gift cards this year, thanks to e-gifting, instant delivery through Facebook, personalized video and mobile giving options. Average spending is expected to be the highest since 2007.

Borders, which filed for bankruptcy protection in February, has extension agreements for 365 stores. But the book seller said in a court filing Thursday that it is still negotiating extensions for 51 stores, many of which are among its top-selling stores, including one near Penn Station in New York.

Wal-Mart Stores said Monday that a recent poll of consumers voted Walmart the No. 1 preferred gift card that consumers most want for Christmas.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores said Monday that a recent poll of consumers voted Walmart the No. 1 preferred gift card that consumers most want for Christmas.

The poll, Top 20 Gift Cards of 2010, was conducted by GiftCardRescue.com.

Walmart also announced that Walmart.com will offer free shipping to home on nearly 60,000 items through 11:30 p.m. PST on Monday. The retailer has also extended the order cut-off date for its site-to-store service from Dec. 17 last year to Dec. 20 this holiday season.
