Yet as the modern buying experience has changed dramatically, the in-store experience at most retailers has remained frozen in time.

Family Dollar plans to close 370 underperforming stores, cut jobs and lower prices on 1,000 basic items following a disappointing second quarter, which was adversely affected by the extra week in last year's quarter, severe weather, holiday promotions and a challenging consumer environment.

The company is also slowing its new store growth beginning in fiscal 2015 to bolster its return on investment. It now anticipates opening 350 to 400 new stores as opposed to approximately 525 stores in 2014.

Asset protection has been given a high priority at Family Dollar where the operator of more than 8,000 stores said it plans to equip each of its locations with electronic article surveillance (EAS) equipment from Checkpoint Systems.

Checkpoint’s technology is already in 3,500 stores and the rollout, said to be one of the fastest in the retail industry, is occurring at a clip of about 120 stores each week.

Sales in the fourth quarter declined 4.5% to $602.4 million due to the combination of a 3.4% same-store sales decline and an extra week in the fourth quarter the prior year, which added sales of $36.5 million. The same-store sales decline was made up of a 4% decline at the Hometown division and 1.5% decline at the outlet division.

Walmart said it would spend close to $500 million in Canada this year with $376 million of that amount dedicated to 35 supercenter projects totaling one million square feet of new selling space. Walmart currently operates 389 stores in Canada, of which 247 are supercenters. By year end it expects to have 395 stores of which 282 will be supercenters.
