Wet Seal CEO John D. Goodman has resigned from the role he took in January 2013. He was charged with turning things around for the struggling retailer and replaced Susan McGalla, who was ousted after 11 months amid declining sales. Goodman is to be succeeded by Edmond Thomas, who rejoins the company as CEO and a member of the board as of Sept. 8.

The company reported a net loss of $16.4 million for the quarter. Fred's total sales for the second quarter of fiscal 2014 increased 2% to $491.2 million. On a comparable-store basis, second-quarter sales decreased 0.1%.

During the second quarter, Ahold USA experienced a dip in sales, while its online grocery operation, Peapod, achieved double-digit sales growth.

Second quarter net sales were €4,408 million, 1.7% lower than last year at constant exchange rates. Identical sales growth excluding gas was down 1.8%, which included the negative impact of the post-Easter week falling in second quarter 2014. The retailer’s overall market share was slightly down, particularly in New England and at Giant Landover, the company stated.

Among the initiatives, Target unveiled a new price-match policy and unveiled a long-term partnership with celebrity designer Sarah Richardson, set to launch next year. Richardson’s new line of home décor will debut exclusively at Target Canada beginning in fall 2015.

The new stores are located at Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga, Ontario; Park Place in Barrie, Ontario and Carrefour Candiac in Candiac, Quebec. The Barrie and Candiac locations are new buildings. Earlier this year, Target opened three locations in Canada, and has plans to open three more later this fall, bringing this year’s total to nine and overall total to 130.
