The nation’s discount chains reported solid results for January, with Target Corp., TJX Cos., and Costco Wholesale Corp. all reporting gains above expectations.

NEW YORK — The nation’s discount chains reported solid results for January, with Target Corp., TJX Cos., and Costco Wholesale Corp. all reporting gains above expectations. Overall, discounters reported stronger results than department stores, which appeared to take a greater hit due to the unseasonably warm weather and heavy promotions.

As the first month of the year, January accounts for only 20% Nov. through Jan. sales, and 7% of annual sales, according to RetailMetrics.

Macy’s Inc. announced that Peter Sachse, the company's chief marketing officer and chairman of Macys.com, will succeed Ron Klein as chief stores officer, effective Feb. 13.

CINCINNATI — Macy’s Inc. announced that Peter Sachse, the company's chief marketing officer and chairman of Macys.com, will succeed Ron Klein as chief stores officer, effective Feb. 13. Klein will retire from Macy's effective March 31, after 36 years with the company.

The Bon-Ton Stores announced Tuesday that its board of directors has elected president and CEO Bud Bergren to the additional role of chairman of the board.

YORK, Pa. — The Bon-Ton Stores announced Tuesday that its board of directors has elected president and CEO Bud Bergren to the additional role of chairman of the board. The board has also accepted Tim Grumbacher’s resignation as executive chairman of the board. Grumbacher remains a director of the company and was named strategic initiatives officer. Additionally, Brendan Hoffman, recently appointed as president and CEO of the company effective Feb. 7, was elected a director of the company. The actions of the board were taken on Jan.

The Bon-Ton Stores said Tuesday it has appointed Brendan L. Hoffman as president and CEO, effective Feb. 7.

York, Pa. — The Bon-Ton Stores said Tuesday it has appointed Brendan L. Hoffman as president and CEO, effective Feb. 7.

Hoffman replaces Bud Bergren, who is a current member of the board of directors and who will transition to the role of the chairman.

Hoffman was the president and CEO of Lord & Taylor since October 2008. Prior to that, he served six years as president and CEO of Neiman Marcus Direct, a subsidiary of The Neiman Marcus Group, where he oversaw the growth of neimanmarcus.com and the launch and growth of bergdorfgoodman.com.

The Bon-Ton Stores reported Thursday that it narrowed its loss in the second quarter to $32.3 million from $33.7 million a year earlier.

YORK, Pa. — The Bon-Ton Stores reported Thursday that it narrowed its loss in the second quarter to $32.3 million from $33.7 million a year earlier.

Sales declined 2.2% to $595.5 million, but aggressive cost-cutting prompted the improved profit performance. Results, however, missed Wall Street expectations.

Same-store sales fell 1.5% for the quarter.
