Total company net sales for the quarter increased 17% to $857 million. Comparable retail segment net sales, which include comparable direct-to-consumer channel, increased 11% for the quarter, while comparable-store net sales were flat.

The operator of Anthropologie, Free People and Urban Outfitters stores said heavy discounting over the holidays took a big toll on margins; in fact, margins have declined for at least five quarters as the retailer has made major markdowns to clear out slow-moving merchandise.

The company reported that comparable-store net sales decreased 1% for the quarter. However, direct-to-consumer comparable-net sales increased 14%. Combined combarable-retail-segment net sales increased 2% for the quarter. Total sales for the quarter rose 9% to $731 million.

For the year ended Jan. 31, total net sales increased to $2.5 billion.

Urban Outfitters Inc. has appointed a former executive as CEO of its namesake brand.

PHILADELPHIA — Urban Outfitters Inc. has appointed a former executive as CEO of its namesake brand. The company named Tedford Marlow as head of the Urban Outfitters Group, effective Feb. 6. Marlow had retired from the chain in 2010, after spending nine years as president of the Urban Outfitters brand.

The announcement came almost a month after Richard Hayne, the company's chairman and president, succeeded CEO Glen Senk, who resigned. Hayne co-founded the company in 1970.

The company reported that earnings for the quarter were $56.7 million compared $71.7 million a year earlier. The company blamed increased expenses related to investments in e-commerce, retail catalogs and technology for the performance slip.

Urban Outfitters said that Stephen Murray has resigned as global president of the Urban Outfitters brand.

PHILADELPHIA -- Urban Outfitters said that Stephen Murray has resigned as global president of the Urban Outfitters brand.

The company said Murray plans to return to London and "pursue an opportunity with a wholesale business having an international focus."

Urban Outfitters CEO Glen Senk will take on Murray's duties until a replacement is found, the company said.

For the full year, profit rose to $273 million from $220 million a year earlier.

Fourth-quarter net sales rose 14% to $668 million. Same-store sales for the quarter increased 4%. By brand, same-store sales rose 1% at Anthropologie, 28% at Free People and 5% for Urban Outfitters.
