Electronic retailer Hhgregg reported net income of $6 million for the second quarter ended Sept. 30, or 16 cents per diluted share, compared with net income of $3.9 million, or 10 cents per diluted share, for the comparable prior-year period.

According to the company, the increase in net income for the second quarter was the result of an increase in net sales due to the net addition of 35 stores during the past 12 months and a comparable-store sales increase of 1.5%.

The NPD Group has some good news for retailers worried about weak video game sales this holiday season, according to a survey of spending habits in the second quarter of 2011, in addition to the $1.44 billion spent in the U.S. by consumers on new physical video and PC game software in the second quarter of 2011, the total consumer spend on content via other monetization methods, including used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile games, is estimated at $1.74 billion.

A survey conducted in September at the annual Shop.org Retail Summit in Boston showed that that almost half of all retailers surveyed planned to offer eGifting this holiday season and 44% were looking at location-based deals as a key element of their mobile marketing strategy.

While other retailers are beefing up their sales staff ahead of the holiday season, Best Buy Co. said Tuesday that it has cut its 2011 seasonal hiring plans to about half of last year’s staff numbers, in a move to curtail costs.

A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts saw sales for its second quarter decrease 0.8% to $99 million from $99.9 million last year.

BERLIN, N.J. — A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts saw sales for its second quarter decrease 0.8% to $99 million from $99.9 million last year. According to the company, the decrease was primarily due to a decrease in comparable-store sales of 0.7%. Net loss for the quarter was $7.9 million, or 32 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $9.7 million, or 40 cents per share in the second quarter of last year.

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Office Depot's position as a leader in the office retail space may be in jeopardy as the company reported a first-quarter loss and sales declines across all of its business platforms.

Office Depot announced that total company sales for the first quarter of 2011 were $3 billion, a decrease of 3% compared with the first quarter of 2010. Excluding sales related to asset dispositions and deconsolidation in the fourth quarter of 2010 and an acquisition in the first quarter of 2011, total company sales decreased 2% versus prior year.

The company is opening its stores early on March 27, the day the Nintendo 3DS becomes available. GameStop reported that 800 stores nationwide will open at 12:01 a.m. and more than 2,400 stores will open early at 9 a.m.

Chesapeake, Va. -- Dollar Tree's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 20.4% to $162.5 million amid rising sales and widening margins.

Net sales for the quarter, which ended Jan. 30, increased 10.7% to $1.73 billion . Same-store sales were up 3.9%.

The company's top-performing categories in the quarter included food, party supplies, health and beauty care, and housewares and home products.
