Fast-growing payments startup Adyen has secured $250 million from investors who have valued the Amsterdam-based startup at $1.5 billion.

Adyen serves as a middleman for Facebook, Spotify, Airbnb and other merchants, enabling them to accept Visa, MasterCard and soon bitcoin in nearly 200 currencies worldwide.

The eight-year-old company allows merchants to accept payments on the Web, mobile and more recently at individual points of sale.

Gift card sales are expected to reach record levels again this holiday season and new research from the National Retail Federation (NRF) offers insight into the increased popularity of stored value products.

More than half of shoppers polled by NRF’s Gift Card Spending Survey said they will buy gift cards this holiday season because the cards allow the recipient to select their own gift. More than 25% of shoppers said gift cards are easier and faster to buy, and 3.8% said the cards help them stick to their holiday budgets.

Kmart said its store payment systems were penetrated by cybercriminals who used a form of malware undetectable by current anti-virus systems.

Kmart said its store payment systems were penetrated by cybercriminals who used a form of malware undetectable by current anti-virus systems.

The retailer said its information technology team on October 9 detected its payment data systems had been breached and immediately launched a full investigation working with a leading IT security firm. It was determined the breach began in early September and upon detection Kmart said it was able to quickly remove the malware.

Walmart already offers a prepaid debit card, credit card, check cashing and money transfers, but it’s expanding its financial services to include an exclusive checking account called GoBank, with Green Dot Corp., a prepaid-cards specialist.

The checking account is linked to MasterCard debit cards. GoBank, which will be available nationwide by the end of October, doesn’t charge overdraft fees or minimum balance fees and waives the monthly membership cost of $8.95 with qualifying direct deposits of $500 a month.

ATM company Payment Alliance International announced Thursday that it would be partnering with Los Angeles-based SchoolsFirst Federal Credit union to brand ATMs at Rite Aid locations in the city.

Some 109 ATMs will be emblazoned with the credit union’s color and logo, and members will be able to use them without incurring an ATM fee. PAI, which owns, the ATMs, will operate and maintain them.
